Finding Those Who Walk With You
Finding a great mentor is an invaluable experience. Fortunately, in life and business we have the opportunity to see the value of mentorship when we are open to it. A great mentor not only offers incredible guidance, but can also open many doors.
Mentorship is not a one way street and it is about influence. It is about guidance. It is about finding your way. The inspiration of a man or woman who can balance you and help you on your path both professionally and personally. I would like to honor those mentors in our lives who have walked with us. Let’s review some of those mentors in our lives
Spiritual Mentors
These are role models who come from literature, politics and history. We have not met them in person, but we read about them, or read their works that inspire and mentor us. Examples of some who have mentored and inspired many spiritually are Gandhi and Mother Theresa. They have walked with many in spirit, influencing and inspiring. Undoubtedly spiritual role models such as Jesus and Buddha have been spiritual mentors to millions through their teachings.
Mythic Mentors
These are the characters who inspire us, despite the fact they are literary figures. These are the heroes that empower us when we think of what they stand for, and where they serve as models and guides. Figures such as Superman, King Arthur, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Zeus, and many others influenced us in our youth. These are the imaginary heroes who have inspired us through their mythic significance.
Living Mentors
These are the men and women who significantly influenced your immediate world. Teachers who made an impact in your life and career. Family members who guided and mentored you into the man or woman you are today. Recall teachers, coaches, grandparents, friends who inspired you. These are perhaps the most powerful mentors for they have truly walked our journey.
Mentorship is a journey. Sometimes a short crossing, sometimes a lifelong one.
Seek out mentorship. And don’t forget to become a mentor to repay those who have walked with you, by walking with another.
